London Masters produced a determined second-half performance to claim the All-Ireland Masters Challenge Cup title with a 1-14 to 1-11 win over Limerick Masters at St Peregrine’s GAA Club in Dublin.
The game was a tale of shifting momentum, London dominated the early stages, Limerick took control before halftime, and the Exiles came from behind after the break to seal a memorable victory.
London hit the ground running and raced into an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead, with points from Mossy Hodnett and JP O’Donnell (both from frees), followed by a powerful effort from Vinny Murphy that would have been worth two under the new rules. Ciaran Deely added another, capping a blistering start from the Exiles. But the game took a turn when Murphy was shown a black card, allowing Limerick to take advantage of the extra man and slowly work their way back into the contest.
Limerick responded with a flurry of scores and began to get on top around the middle. JP O’Donnell landed another fine point for London, but Limerick continued to build momentum, eventually drawing level before Ciaran Langford struck to nudge London ahead briefly. Still, the Munster men finished the half stronger. Despite scores from O’Donnell and Lorcan Mulvey, Limerick’s pressure paid off as they grabbed a crucial goal and went into the break leading 1-6 to 0-8.
The second half began with London showing renewed purpose. A Point from Paddy Donaghy brought them closer, but the key moment came when Jonathan Douglas won and coolly dispatched a penalty to the net, levelling the game at 1-8 apiece and shifting momentum firmly in London’s favour.
Moments later, Limerick were reduced to 14 men after a high tackle earned a straight red card, giving London a huge boost.
From there, JP O’Donnell punished Limerick with another free, and Vinny Murphy added a point after returning from his earlier black card. Ciaran Deely slotted over a free as London opened up a lead at 1-12 to 1-9. Hodnett added another from a dead ball to make it 1-13 to 1-10, before Londons last the score of the game came and it was their best, patient and intelligent passage of play involving seven different London players, ending with Ciaran Deely curling over a superb point to make it 1-14 to 1-11.
Limerick fought to the end and launched several dangerous attacks in the closing minutes, but London’s defence stood tall. A last-gasp goal chance was denied by a brilliant block on the line from Peter Downey, a moment that typified London’s grit and desire to finish the job.
When the final whistle blew, it confirmed a hard-earned and deserved 1-14 to 1-11 win for London, who showed character to recover from a halftime deficit and composure to see it out against a tough Limerick side. The cup heads back across the water with a group of players who left everything on the pitch.
The celebrations that followed were a joyous, with players, management, and supporters coming together to savour the victory.
Special thanks were extended to Lorraine and everyone at St Peregrine’s GAA Club for their warm hospitality and flawless organisation, which made the day all the more memorable. As the team toasted their success.
Also thanks to Gaelic Masters association for such a well run competition and Limerick for the great match.
A few players admitted that what they had suggested would be their last hurrah this year might now stretch into another season……and the real challenge might be figuring out how to break the news to their wives!
